Fresh Summer Cooler

Summer means lovely picnics in the park and time spent in the garden but it's nice to have a cool drink to quench your thirst on a hot day.

Here is a simple recipe for a delicious Summer Cooler:

(Serves 6)

Crushed Ice
Angostura Bitters
1-2 Limes or a Lemon
Tonic Water

Half fill glasses with the crushed ice; top each glass with 5 drops of Bitters and a squeeze of Lime/Lemon Juice, slice the remaining fruit. Top the glasses with tonic and garnish with the remaining slices. You can also add mint for a fresh flavour.

SIO Tips no. 45: Juicing Oranges, Lemons and Limes

To get the most juice out of fresh lemons, orange, or limes, ensure you let them get to room temperature before you roll them with your palm on a chopping board or worktop. This way you get all the juice as it is released more easily by the juicer, hand held or electric.

Your very own Wells Dressing!

Crafting with the kids on this rainy day? Lots of ideas in our making section and also freebies for those registered on the site. http://www.seekitout.co.uk/to-make.html

FAMILY CRAFTING IDEA
How about a family craft day to see who can create something amazing. In the Peak District the traditional Wells Dressings use natural products from nature and clay to produce spectacular pictures, the tradition goes back way into history.  The results they achieve are spectacular to say the least.

So how about some simple plasticine or similar, even double sided tape (carpet tape - try B&Q), piece of card or board, rice, dried pulses, scraps of fabric, beads, old wrappings, egg shells, flower petals, moss, pebbles or scrunched up paper to create a family masterpiece, does not have to be done in a day so could not be more perfect.  Slip under a bed or on top of a cupboard for safe keeping till done.  Worried it will dry out cover carefully with cling film till done. Check these ideas out bit.ly/M0xPMu  Often religious yours can be anything, people, flowers, Olympics, date in History, even random modern art.... the world really is your oyster

Jubilee Mania

With the big build up to the Jubilee, the games and a summer of Rule Britannia just wonder how many will have a lasting legacy to remember.  Will it just be a crumpled rain splattered row of paper butting to remind you or something far more special.

A special picnic with lots of photo's to keep the memories alive.  A family or solo project to make the decorations, bake a special cake or create something fashionable to last long after the moment has gone.  What could you do to give your Jubilee more of an impact - the possibilities are endless.  The important thing is to look back later and smile as the memories flood back.

So are you ready, only days to go and what have you decided to do.  You do not have to follow the Union Jack theme, you can create anything you like.  Knit a hat or crochet a cushion cover in any colour safe in the knowledge that every time you put on your hat or plump up your cushion you will know that was your very own Jubilee project.  So better get cracking spring will not last long, it will be Jubilee and summer before you know it!
